Pollinators are essential to our ecosystem. Over 75% of the world's flowering plants and 35% of the world's crops rely on pollinators. In 2021, Maury County Parks & Recreation participated in Parks for Pollinators to help promote pollinator protection.
Parks for Pollinators is a national campaign focused on raising public awareness of the current pollinator crisis by encouraging local action and positioning parks as a national leader in advancing pollinator health and native habitat. This campaign assesses the public’s understanding of pollinators to outline actions to protect them and to increase local park and recreation agencies’ capacity to promote pollinator protection within parks, and to engage and educate their communities on what they can do to help.
Pollinators are essential to our ecosystem. Over 75% of the world's flowering plants and 35% of the world's crops rely on pollinators. One out of every three bites of food you eat is there because of pollinators! They not only are essential for our food production, but also support healthy ecosystems (NRPA 2021).
In 2021, Maury County Parks & Recreation participated in the Parks for Pollinators Bioblitz to see how many pollinator species could be documented during the month of September. Using the iNaturalist app, participants simply took photos of pollinators (bee, butterfly, bat, etc.) or plants and the online community helped to identify the species.

Observations within our county included species such as the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, Common Eastern Bumble Bee, and the Tawny Emperor...a species of brush-footed butterfly that are native to North America!
