Registered dietitians provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT) for uninsured patients when referred by their physicians for nutrition care management. Nutrition therapy referrals include counseling for weight management, diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension. The dietitian develops individualized nutrition care plans based on the assessment of the nutrition-related problem to identify and either manage or correct a lifestyle or dietary practice. Continual reassessment and analysis of the patient’s progress is an interdisciplinary approach between the dietitian and the referring primary care physician.
